Knitters helping people affected by the fires in southern Chile

Everyone in Chile is deeply moved by the emergency facing so many families in the central and southern parts of the country due to the devastating forest fires. The Ñuble and Biobío regions have been hit hard, with tens of thousands of people evacuated, hundreds of homes destroyed, and a human tragedy that continues to grow.

This situation has sparked a massive outpouring of solidarity across the country. Many families have lost everything they owned, and all of Chile has mobilized to help in various ways.

Solidarity from the knitting community

As knitters, we feel this reality very deeply and want to contribute by doing what we do best: knitting to help 💛.

👉 I suggest channeling the knitted item donations through Abrigar la Esperanza.

What can you knit to show your support?

  • Small knitted or crocheted squares (such as granny squares or basic squares made with knitting needles) to be joined together into collective blankets for those who have lost their homes.
  • Clothing for children and babies , ideal for giving to families arriving at shelters or aid centers.
  • Teddy bears, knitted or crocheted dolls (amigurumi-style).

❤️ Why knit?

Because we know that a gesture—even just a single square—can turn into something much bigger when we knit together . This is a way of saying “we are with you” to those who have lost so much in this emergency. As always, our community comes together with generosity, creativity, and a lot of heart to support the causes that truly matter.

🧣 Donate a finished blanket

If you prefer to donate a ready-made blanket , without having to knit it yourself, you can also do so through an initiative that combines textile recycling, social impact, and direct aid :

This option is ideal if:

  • You don't have time to knit right now.
  • You are outside Chile.
  • You want to provide immediate and concrete support.

🤍 Other ways to help: direct donations

If you cannot knit right now, or if you prefer to support in another way, donating money directly is a very concrete and necessary way to help the families affected by the fires in southern Chile.

Here are some organizations with a proven track record, a presence on the ground, and active donation channels —many of which are also accessible from abroad:

💡 For those outside Chile:
These organizations have platforms that allow you to donate from abroad using an international card or bank transfer , making this an excellent option if you are not physically in the country but wish to show your support.

🧶 Every contribution counts

Whether it’s knitting a small square or a whole garment, sharing information, or making a donation, every bit helps .
As always, we knitters show that our community goes far beyond stitches and yarn: we come together to offer companionship, support, and help 🤍.
